In praise of 'snow days'!

I've been really ill with flu since early last week.  On Thursday morning my breathing problems were so bad that we ended up at the emergency out of hours surgery at the hospital.  I haven't been able to keep food down and I have lost 7 lbs in weight since Tuesday evening.  I seem to have lost a few days of my life somewhere.

I'm on the mend now.  The antibiotics have kicked in and the blinding headache has eased.  I still feel weak because my body doesn't really want to eat but I have stopped any more weight loss.

My school isn't especially nice to people who have time off for ill health.  You probably know how it is... Nothing is said exactly - but there's a definite atmosphere that you've 'let the side down'; 'could have come really'; 'I had your bad cold and came in..' etc  As a result I was planning on dragging myself in today.

Divine intervention has come in the form of a 'snow day'.   My school is closed to all pupils and staff - it says so on the website!  Never has a snow day been so welcome.....

Normal posts will resume once I've started doing something other than sleep!   Stay warm and safe (or cool and safe - if you are reading this from the Southern Hemisphere).  Jx

  1. Jan, I am so sorry you have been so sick. The flu has been really bad here as well. I am fortunate, when really sick, we are encouraged to stay home. I feel more guilty when a co-worker comes down with what I brought to school. Stay warm and drink plenty of fluids. Bonnie

  2. So sorry you've been unwell but glad you're on the mend. I went down with the flu just after New Year and its taken me until now to feel like me again. I wouldn't rush back to work for fear of being ridiculed, it's just not worth it, your health is more important than all those goody two shoes. Take care and keep warm.

  3. Get well soon. You need to stay off if you're not well, they might make comments with hidden meanings, but you won't be thought any better of for going in if you're ill. Daniel's not very well at the moment and our school has closed today because of the snow, so it was really welcome here too, though he's got exams from Wednesday onwards so he'll have to go in then regardless.

  4. Oh no, that sounds like it was really bad. I hope this extra day off will get you feeling good enough to go back tomorrow. All you need is a relapse. They might make you feel like you let the side down, but I bet they keep their distance from you if you are coughing. ;)

  5. Hi Jan I can empathise with you.It sounds as if we had the same thing. My eyes are still quite sore now and I'm finding it hard to do anything much apart from read the odd blog.I still dont feel brilliant, sinusitis and fatigue so my doctor has signed me off sick for a week. I am going to rest up and enjoy being stuck indoors.Hope you are fully recovered soon but dont be too ambitious and rush back.

  6. Glad to hear that you're on the mend Jan and that the snow day proved timely for you. I really don't understand the insistence that people go in however ill they're feeling - they usually end up worse and having to have more time off. K's HOD was marvellous with her last year when she was particularly bad with her asthma after she'd 'just got a cold'- the words of others in the dept who weren't quite so kind.He sent her home, having seen how ill she was.She was off for a couple of weeks - doctor's orders- and was then allowed to resume part time before going back to her full time hours.

  7. So sorry you have been down with this terrible flu! We've had a time with it here, but are on the mend. Glad to hear that you are too! Thank goodness for snow days!

  8. Too many workplaces these days make you feel guilty about time off for illness. If you do go in however you risk passing on the illness and in the end they end up with more people off ill. Going back too soon can end up with a relapse and then there is always twice the guilt! You just can't win can you? I had a particularly nasty viral infection from midway through December right into the New Year - I was so grateful for the Xmas break - the infections this year do seem to be worse and take longer to recover from than those in previous years.

  9. Sorry to hear you've been unwell, that snow day was perfectly timed and I'm glad you're on the mend now. Perhaps we could do with another load of snow for another snow day tomorrow!

We have similar problems at my school and are also expected to work if we are ill. The head teacher is a horrible person and she makes all the staff miserable. I didn't get a snow day today, even though the snow was worse than Friday.

  10. Please look after yourself, no job is worth making yourself really ill, easy to say I know but your health is worth so much.

Fingers crossed the school will be closed tomorrow ;-) x

  11. It sounds like you had the really bad flu virus! I'm glad you're recovering. Your immunity should be tip-top after all that!

  12. So sorry to hear that you have been ill, flu really does tire you out and you need a few days to make sure you are well again. I've worked at places where you are made to feel guilty if you have time off but your health is more important. Thank goodness for the snow day with any luck you'll get another one tomorrow:)

  13. I'm sorry that you have been so ill. I would think that employers would want you to stay home and not spread it around.Take care and get a lot of rest and fluids.

  14. I'm sorry you've been so ill, you should make quite sure you are well before going back to work as flu really takes it out of you. As for people who go to work/school even when they are ill! If they stayed at home and kept their germs to themselves there would be a lot less illness around!! Hope you feel much better very soon.

  15. Poor you, flu is awful (and nothing like a bad cold), I hope you don't have to return to work before you really feel up to it. xx

  17. Glad to know you are getting back on your feet. The problem with going to work when you are so sick is that you infect so many others around you. I never understood why they want you to do that. I get a flu shot every year just to be safe.
